Characters have different identifiers, or "traits," based on their affiliation (Avengers, Defenders, SHIELD, etc.), origin of power (Skill, Bio, etc.), class (Blaster, Support, etc.), or even generally whether they are a hero or villain.

Some game modes or specific missions can be restricted to particular traits. For example, only HEROES can participate in the Heroes Campaign.
