Each win in Duels lets you progress along a pathway toward various prizes, with the biggest prize located at the end. Once you've completed this path, you will start at the beginning of a new prize path that is repeatable.

If you end up on the losing side of a Duels match, you must wait a little while before being able to play again for free. You may spend Gems to bypass the timer and immediately get back into the action!
